September '99:
In April '97, Gunburner signed to the independent label Stainless Music. By July ’97, the band released their 1st CD, started playing the regional club circuit and built a grassroots fanbase. As time went on we started to develop a solid buzz that created some major label interest. All this was great, however something was missing. That something was MP3.com!

As we explored ways to keep the buzz and fans growing, we didn’t even grasp the power and potential of MP3.com. We all said, “let’s see what happens.” After just one month we looked at the site stats and couldn’t believe what we saw. Hundreds of downloads and new CDs sold in markets we never played! That was all we needed to smack the sense into our entire camp. We turned up the mp3 effort full speed by utilizing all the tools and services that are offered for free on the site.

By July we were getting thousands of downloads and selling CDs all over the world! By this time we had already showcased for Columbia records, but they were sitting on the fence for quite some time. When we started to report the massive response that our patented sound of face-melting rock was receiving, the corporate brass started paying a lot more attention to what we really had going on. Plus, other major labels and industry players started knocking on our door via MP3.com.

All this played a huge part in Gunburner securing our first major label deal with Columbia Records. It truly was the missing link to our success, new fans, buzzzzz and, of course, CD sales.

In April ’99 we were just one of the 26,000 UN-signed bands on MP3.com. Now were recording our 1st major label release with platinum producer Matt Wallace, opening for the Goo Goo Dolls and destroying swank hotel rooms in Beverly Hills! Best of all, we were able to negotiate to keep our presence here at MP3.com.

Keep rocking and thanks for all the support.

GUNBURNER

p.s. Send us an email. We wanna hear from you!

Congrats to Gunburner, sounds like they've really taken advantage of the technology and taken iniative.

The only question I have is the eternal question, how do you not only promote to those on your mailing/email list, but attract newcomers to your site. Other than being a featured artist and posting things in the message boards, how can an artist stand out from those 26,000 UN-signed bands.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

How,

How did they negotiate keeping all those songs available for download on mp3.com,thats gotta change soon. I can't imagine a major record company giving away anything.

Congratulations to Gunburner, but before anyone breaks out the champagne, I'd like to remind you that being signed to a major doesn't mean much these days. Anyone who's read Steve Albini's article, read Moses Avalon's book and seen (or heard) the horror stories knows.

They're signed? hurray! The majors are wising up to the concept. Just remember that majors sign a lot of artists, but few really reap the rewards. I hope the label backs them up and they promote themselves like hell to reap the rewards

I'm not being an asshole. Simply pointing some realities of the 'industry'.

Hi,
We had some guy contact us (Oombah) about band management because of exposure on mp3.com.
Being from Australia, someone with international contacts could be huge for us.
Thanks for the exposure.

Gunburner - What great news for you! To be on a major label is rare, and while money in your pocket may be down the road a piece, YOU ARE IN THE GAME. Opening for the Goo Goo Dolls IS label support and a vote from the label that they believe in the potential of your band. A label could hook you up with any number of less successful bands - BUT THE GG DOLLS means they want to give you good exposure and optimize your chance of success. You'll expand your fan base a helluva lot faster opening for them than 'The Unknowns'. Give 'em the best you got. Will keep a watch for you. Good luck and congrats, Max Menius.
